The Goals
  • Design and construct a self-supporting classical Chinese garden in, or near, downtown Birmingham
  • Establish a self-supporting Asian Cultural Center adjacent to the garden
  • Encourage and facilitate creation of an "Asia Terrace" commercial/residential district in the area of the garden and cultural center
  • Promote diversity, understanding, and friendship through education and on-going programs in the Asian arts
  • Provide venues that support mental and physical willness in the Birmingham community

The Concept
The Birmingham Chinese Garden - Asian Cultural Center Foundation vision consists of an urban classical Chinese Garden, a unique building to house an Asian Cultural Education Center, and a commercial/residential development incorporating Asian design features known as Asia Terrace.

The Inspiration
Inspiration for the Birmingham Chinese Garden is to honor one of Birmingham's earliest Chinese entrepreneurs, Mr. Joe Wing Soon, who opened Joy Young Restaurant in 1924. The Portland (Oregon) Classical Chinese Garden is the second source of inspiration.

Designed by a world-renowned Chinese garden designer and horticulturist, the garden would be a place of beauty on the edge of the bustle of midtown Birmingham.

The Birmingham Asian Cultural Education Center is intended to provide the Birmingham Asian communities their own midtown venue to host cultural/educational events for themselves as well as the greater Birmingham community and state.

The combination of a Birmingham Chinese Garden, a Birmingham Asian Cultural Education Center, and a commercial Asia Terrace community would be a major step forward for midtown redevelopment and efforts to draw people and businesses to the midtown area.

Anyone interested in joining the Chinese Garden Advisory Committee or the Asian Cultural Center Advisory Committee should communicate with the Foundation Chairman.
